Six Sigma is a data-driven project management protocol - I received my Six Sigma Green Belt Certification in September, 2006.

The objective of Six Sigma is to deliver high performance, reliability and added value to the end customer.  The core of the Six Sigma methodology is a data-driven, systematic approach to problem solving, with a focus on customer impact and cost savings.

Six Sigma's methodology focuses on the identification and correction of defects in the process and systematically works towards managing variations in the process to eliminate those defects.  Defects are defined as unacceptable deviations from set targets (for example, missed on-time delivery goals).

The standard Six Sigma methodology consists of the following five steps:

  • Define the process improvement goals that are consistent with customer needs and your company's goals.
  • Measure the current process and collect relevant data for future comparison.
  • Analyze to determine the relationship of all factors and ensure that all factors have been considered.
  • Improve or optimize the process based upon analysis, using techniques that test and validate the proposed changes.
  • Control the process to ensure that any variances are corrected before they result in defects.  Set up pilot runs to establish process capability, transition to production and thereafter continuously measure the process and institute control mechanisms.

Six Sigma project managers participate in an intensive hands-on training process and are only certified after they have demonstrated their proficiency through the use of the protocols on real projects with true customer improvement impact.
